PINTU Pengembangan Workshop: How to Talk to Anyone

Can you strike a conversation with anyone? Some ‘gifted’ people seem to prove that they can.  Seriously, how does one manage to casually talk to just about anyone in the room while others just sit around, nervously waiting for the right moment for another person to probably come along and finally start a conversation…only to give some awkward answer? Yup. Worst feeling ever.

In an attempt to cater to various demands of university life, PINTU XV Professional Development division held a workshop titled How to Talk to Anyone on the 4th of March 2017. With our own friendly Year 4 senior, Jefferson Qiu, as the speaker, it was our very first workshop that focused on developing interpersonal skills, especially those concerning communication skills.
Below is the summary of what the workshop was about:
Instead of focusing merely on communication in terms of speech, communication between two parties involves verbal and nonverbal expressions through which exchange of messages and intentions happen.
Nonverbal communication encompasses both vocal-related factors (speed, pronunciation, pitch, etc) and gestures (facial, torso, arms, feet). These various nonverbal expressions can be relayed in various ways to deliver the intended message. *Despite being responsible for 93% of total communication impact, not many people are aware of the best way to convey their non-verbal message effectively and efficiently. *
Our workshop thus revolves around this idea of interpreting and utilizing nonverbal communication. Furthermore, participants had the chance to practice of getting intended messages across to the other party through nonverbal communication. At the end of the talk, the participants engaged in meaningful discussion with the speaker and left the speaker session having learnt something new.
We hope that the workshop was fruitful for everyone! For those who missed it, fret not! The workshop has been recorded to be watched at your convenience. Feel free to watch and share it with your friends!

Last but not least, we would like to express our special thanks to Jefferson Qiu for making the session a big success! Also, to the Professional Development Division for planning and ensuring that the workshop went smoothly and well! And most importantly, to all who have in any way supported, attended, and read this! We hope to see you around for our other events!
